L’Association des Amis du Thermalisme is a nonprofit association founded on February 26, 2020. It was born out of the momentum initiated by the ‘Committee of Elders,’ established by the Greater Nancy Metropolis to support the development of the Nancy Thermal project. For 12 years, this committee contributed to defining the project through reflections, validations, analyses, studies, and the development of strategic directions, mobilizing research and development at each stage.
The University of Thermalism is an annual international congress focused on crenotherapy and medical hydrology, bringing together healthcare professionals, experts in thermal medicine, academics, and researchers. It promotes the exchange of practices and sharing of advancements in the field of thermalism. Under the high patronage of the National Academy of Medicine, the program is validated each year by its members. Initially held at the University of Nancy, the event has been taking place at the Faculty of Medicine in Nancy since 2020, with virtual sessions allowing global participation.
Guided tour of the Luxembourg Palace from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM: an opportunity to discover this 17th-century architectural masterpiece, a symbol of French heritage.
The second day will be dedicated to the three working sessions of the University of Thermalism, in the Monory Room of the Palais du Luxembourg, from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
The last day offers a guided tour of the Enghien-les-Bains Thermal Baths from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the only thermal establishment located near Paris, known for the quality of its sulfur waters, which are beneficial for respiratory and ENT conditions.
Thermalism, rooted in medical tradition for millennia, relies on empirical observations of the beneficial effects of thermal waters on health. Used to treat a variety of conditions such as rheumatological, dermatological, or respiratory disorders, these mineral waters have shown promising effects.
Les Amis du Thermalisme have built cooperative and exchange ties with international associations and organizations, including FEMTEC (The World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy), and participate in think tanks and working groups.
Its members include medical and paramedical professionals, academics, independent and hospital-based practitioners, as well as students involved in thermalism or interested in medical hydrology and various methods of crenotherapy.

L’association des amis du thermalisme was born from the momentum created by the Committee of Sages, established by the Greater Nancy Metropolis to contribute to the development of the Nancy Thermal project. For over 12 years, this committee worked on in-depth reflections, validations, analyses, and studies, while defining strategic directions and mobilizing research and development at every stage of the project.
On January 20, 2021, André Rossinot decided to step down as president of the association and handed the role over to Marie Catherine Tallot.
Thus, over these twelve years, alongside the Grand Nancy Thermal project and under the guidance of the relevant health and thermalism authorities, with the support of experts gathered within the Committee of Sages, several initiatives have been launched:
L’Université du Thermalisme is an annual international event dedicated to the advancements and challenges of thermal medicine and medical hydrology. Created to foster exchanges between healthcare professionals, researchers, academics, and specialists in thermalism, it provides a unique space for sharing practices, research results, and innovations in the field of balneotherapy.
Organized under the high patronage of the National Academy of Medicine, the University of Thermalism addresses a variety of topics related to prevention, rehabilitation, and the integration of new technologies in thermal medicine. Each edition brings together internationally renowned experts, enabling a rich dialogue on development prospects and challenges to be met in this sector.
The University of Thermalism thus actively contributes to promoting and enhancing the visibility of thermal medicine, combining scientific rigor with openness to innovation, to meet the public health needs of the 21st century.
Clinical studies conducted within the thermal medicine research program explore various areas of care in thermal settings.
Study on Knee Osteoarthritis: Led by Professor Isabelle Chary VALCKENAERE, this study compares two types of thermal therapies—classic and active—for patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. It assesses the impact of thermal treatments (hydromassages, mud baths, kinesi-balneotherapy, etc.) on joint pain and function.
Aquatic Rehabilitation After Knee Ligamentoplasty in Athletes: Conducted by Professors Philippe PERRIN, Didier MAINARD, and Franck WEIN, this study examines the effectiveness of aquatic-based physical therapy to accelerate recovery in athletes who have undergone ACL ligamentoplasty.
Kinesi-balneotherapy for Parkinson’s Disease, THERMAPARK: In partnership with France Parkinson and the University of Lorraine, this study, led by Professor Philippe PERRIN, compares the effects of aquatic-based rehabilitation with land-based therapy on the quality of life of Parkinson’s patients.
Rehabilitation After Shoulder Surgery, THERMASCAP: This upcoming study will be led by Professors PERRIN, Didier MAINARD, and Isabelle Chary VALCKENAERE. It compares thermal-based rehabilitation with conventional rehabilitation to optimize functional recovery post-shoulder surgery in professionally active patients under 60.
Jet Massage Technique, THERMAJET: This study, currently under development and coordinated by Professors Isabelle Chary VALCKENAERE and Philippe PERRIN, evaluates the benefits of jet massage in reducing pain in patients with chronic low back pain. It aims to develop an innovative, non-invasive rehabilitation protocol using targeted thermal water jets to improve mobility, strengthen postural muscles, and enhance proprioception.
Assessment of the Therapeutic Effect of Halotherapy Using Varangéville Mine Salt: This study, currently in development and led by Benoît TALLOT, Agnès BRANCHU, and the town of Varangéville (Mayor: Christopher Varin), explores the effects of halotherapy (inhalation of salt aerosols) for asthma patients. Inspired by experiences in Poland and Romania, this research aims to replicate the underground conditions of temperature, humidity, and salt concentration from the Varangéville mine in a surface-level “salt cave.” The goal is to evaluate the improvement in respiratory function for asthmatic patients who are stabilized but not fully managed by conventional treatments. Over three weeks, asthma patients will receive sessions three times per week, randomly assigned to either a salt room or a placebo room, followed by spirometric tests (FEV1, FVC, PEFR) to measure the effects of halotherapy.
National and International Congress of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, and Balneology from September 3 to 10, 2022, in Slanic Moldova and Techirghiol, Romania.
73rd International Scientific Congress of the World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy (FEMTEC) from November 3 to 6, 2022, in Castel San Pietro Terme (Bologna), Italy: “Thermalism in Societies in Transition.”
74th International Scientific Congress of the World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy (FEMTEC) from October 26 to 29, 2023, in Ourense (Galicia, Spain): “Balneotherapy of the Future.”
Padua 5 Days on Muscle and Mobility Medicine – February 27, 28, 29, and March 1, 2, 2024, at the Thermae of Euganean Hills, Padua, Italy.
